New coloring book salutes women pioneers in STEM

February 11, 2021 – In honor of International Day of Women and Girls in Science (February 11), the Vilcek Foundation has released a free coloring book that celebrates the scientific careers and contributions of 19 outstanding contemporary women scientists and physicians.

The downloadable digital publication, Think Like A Girl: A Coloring Book of Women Pioneers in STEM, features brief biographies of each of the 19 scientists, accompanied by illustrations by graphic artist Paula Kinsel representing each scientist and their work. The book also includes a resource list highlighting 15 organizations whose work directly supports broadening gender equity and diversity in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), including the National Girls Collaborative Project, The Association for Women in Science, the Rosalind Franklin Society, and Girls Who Code.

“Thanks to female STEM leaders throughout history … our world is rapidly changing,” writes computational biologist Pardis Sabeti in the book’s introduction. “Today, the world of STEM is just beginning to mirror the rich diversity present within our communities. We must continue to expand the table so that more creative minds can join us.”

The Vilcek Foundation highlights diversity in STEM through its prizes programs, which recognize the contributions of immigrants to scientific research and discovery, and to medicine and healthcare in the United States. All of the 19 scientists featured in Think Like A Girl: A Coloring Book of Women Pioneers in STEM are not only important women leaders in STEM, they are immigrants whose contributions and experiences have been recognized by the Vilcek Foundation.

“Visibility and recognition of women and minorities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics is vital if we are to foster greater equity for underrepresented groups in the next generation of scientific leaders,” says Mona Hanna-Attisha, recipient of the Vilcek-Gold Award for Humanism in Healthcare, and one of the 19 women featured in the book. “We hope the creative and accessible format of Think Like A Girl: A Coloring Book of Women Pioneers in STEM inspires young scientists to imagine and envision their own future successes.”
