Carlos Moreno, M.D., chairman of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth), has been recognized for his contributions to community health by Spring Branch Community Health Center (SBCHC).

At SBCHC's 6th Annual Fall Harvest Luncheon, Moreno was presented an award named in honor of longtime center supporter and UTHealth professor emeritus Louis Faillace, M.D. Faillace is a founding board member of SBCHC and an advocate for medically underserved populations. He was also the founding chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at McGovern Medical School.

"The Faillace Award recognizes the often overlooked but important work of health care providers such as Dr. Moreno," SBCHC CEO Marlen Trujillo, M.B.A. said. "It's a small token of our gratitude for the impact he's had on our community."

A graduate of Harvard Medical School, Moreno completed a residency at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and a fellowship at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He is a past president of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine and the C. Frank Webber, M.D. Chair of Family Medicine at UTHealth.

Serving in academic family medicine for 25 years, Moreno sees patients at the UT Physicians Family Medicine Clinic-Texas Medical Center and Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center.

SBCHC aims to decrease health disparities and increase the number of healthy individuals and families in the community. SBCHC is a growing component of the primary care safety net in Houston/Harris County where 1.1 million people are uninsured and/or medically underserved. Since SBCHC began seeing patients in 2004, it has grown from one to five clinic locations, serving 13,567 patients in 2015.
