Renowned scientists will address topics as databases, machine learning, high-performance computing and image processing

The São Paulo School of Advanced Science on Learning from Data will be held in Brazil from July 29 through August 9 at the University of São Paulo’s International Diffusion Center.

Reporters are invited to register for the scientific sessions and short courses, which will present state-of-art science and results of new research.

The School will cover topics such as fundamentals of extracting information from data, machine learning, pattern recognition, fundamentals of databases and high-performance computing, as well as applications of data science to real problems.

“Big Data Systems and Analytics”, with Ling Liu, from the Georgia Tech College of Computing, “Data Science for Social Good”, with Raymond Ng, from the University of British Columbia, “Deep Learning”, with Zhangyang (Atlas) Wang, from the Texas A&M University, and “Advances in Kernel Machine Learning”, with Stéphane Canu, from the National Institute of Applied Science in Rouen, are some of the topics that will be covered by the School.

The São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) is supporting the event through its São Paulo School of Advanced Science Program (SPSAS). Graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and researchers who are already working on subjects relating to data Science can apply to receive financial support to cover the cost of air travel, accommodation and meals.

The ten-day event will include short courses and lectures designed to present an integrated in-depth view of data science fundamentals, technologies and applications.

It also aims to connect data science to other knowledge areas and will therefore include discussion of applications of data science techniques to real problems in astronomy, economics, genetics and image processing, as well as data management in the context of open science. There will also be a session in which experts assess the impact of data science on society and a series of poster presentations by participants on their work in progress.
