Mesozoic Avian Evolution Showed Sustained Long-Term Increase in Relative Forelimb Length

Researchers examining theropod evolution have identified explicit evidence of a sustained, long-term trend toward increased relative forelimb length in Mesozoic birds that occurred independently of allometry-associated elongation. Using Bayesian phylogenetic comparative methods across multiple phylogenies, the researchers evaluated temporal patterns in relative total forelimb length alongside individual forelimb bones through theropod lineages leading to birds.

The evolution of avian flight is characterized by a gradual accumulation of various morphologies over time, yet an explicit temporal trend in wing length had previously remained elusive. This absence persisted despite fossil record expectations of increasing forelimb length leading to birds, as well as theoretical expectations of wing length increases over time driven by selection for improved flight performance from early birds to modern fliers.

To evaluate these dynamics, the study tested for temporal trends while accounting for allometric relationships and assessing heterogeneity in evolutionary rates. By simultaneously accounting for relationships between traits and evaluating multiple hypotheses of shared phylogenetic histories, the comparative framework clarified the tempo and mode of transitions in locomotion during avian evolution.

The analysis also explained earlier findings of heterogeneous evolutionary rates across avialan forelimb bones. The authors conclude that accounting for trait interactions alongside multiple phylogenetic hypotheses is vital for understanding how flight evolved in early birds and how forelimb elongation contributed to their ultimate domination of the skies.
