Two Decades of Ecological Math Modeling Mapped Against UN Goals

A new scientometric analysis has charted how mathematical modeling in ecology has developed over twenty years, and where its themes fall short of global sustainability targets. The study, published in BMC Ecology and Evolution as an open-access research article on 22 October 2026, audits 229 peer-reviewed journal papers indexed in Scopus between 2005 and 2025, with the search window closing on 6 August 2025.

The authors, Srinivasarao Thota, Chandan Kumar and P. Shanmugasundaram, deliberately avoided an unrestricted meta-synthesis of the entire field of quantitative biology. Instead, they restricted their audit to papers dealing with the explicit formalization of the link between mathematics and ecology, combining bibliometric profiling, keyword network co-occurrence analysis, and automated SDG classification using the SciVal tool.

The central finding is a thematic architecture organized around three core clusters. The first covers biological foundations and experimental calibration, the second epidemiological and human dimensions, and the third theoretical mathematical dynamics. This structure, the authors report, emerges from the keyword co-occurrence networks built from the corpus of 229 papers.

Alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals was quantified for the corpus. Of the 229 papers, 116 articles were found to align directly with UN targets. Within that aligned subset, the distribution is heavily concentrated: 40 percent of the aligned articles map to Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), 26 percent to Life on Land (SDG 15), and 16 percent to Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8).

Alongside these concentrations, the analysis identifies persistent gaps at the techno-ecological interface.

The stated motivation for the work is that mathematical modeling in ecology is considered indispensable for deciphering ecological complexity and guiding sustainable resource governance, yet its explicit alignment with the SDGs had remained insufficiently quantified.

On the methodological side, the authors describe the output as defining methodological strengths, thematic deficits, and a multi-level framework intended for the implementation of quantitative ecological modeling and its transformation into policy mechanisms under the UN 2030 Agenda. The framework is presented as a proposal for how the field’s modeling capacity could be connected more systematically to policy processes.

Several caveats should be kept in view when reading these results. The corpus is limited to 229 Scopus-indexed papers that explicitly formalize the mathematics-ecology link, so the findings describe that defined subset rather than the whole of quantitative biology or all ecological modeling. The SDG classification was performed with an automated SciVal classifier, and the article was shared early as a peer-reviewed accepted manuscript, citable with a permanent DOI but subject to further edits before the final Version of Record replaces it.

Within those limits, the study offers a quantified snapshot of two decades of ecological mathematical modeling: a field anchored in biological foundations, epidemiology and theoretical dynamics, strongly aligned with health, terrestrial life and economic growth goals, and with measurable blind spots where technology-driven sustainability themes are concerned.
