The David H. Murdock Research Institute in Kannapolis received a $50 million gift Wednesday from its founder, David Murdock. The nonprofit institute is part of N.C. Research Campus, a 350-acre biotech hub in Kannapolis. Murdock has pumped $600 million into the biotechnology hub and the David H. Murdock Research Institute based there. Scientists are looking for new cancer treatments and preventions based on natural compounds and healthier varieties of fruits and vegetables.

The donation will support operations at the research institute over the next eight years.
“This is truly a long-term transformational gift for operations,” says Steve Lommel, interim president of the research institute. “It really does liberate us to grow.”

The donation will allow the institute to begin conducting its own research tied to improving health and life through nutrition.
