The World Cultural Council has announced that Professor Katerina Harvati will receive the 2026 Albert Einstein World Award of Science. Harvati, Chair of Paleoanthropology and Director of the Senckenberg Centre for Human Evolution and Paleoenvironment at the University of Tübingen, Germany, is being recognized for research that has reshaped how scientists interpret human origins.

Her impact stems from methodological breakthroughs that moved fossil analysis into a truly quantitative era. By developing Virtual Anthropology and 3D geometric morphometrics, Harvati enabled three-dimensional comparisons of skeletal form and virtual reconstruction of fragmentary remains—approaches that have become widely adopted across paleoanthropology.

A central contribution has been morphometric evidence distinguishing Neanderthals from Homo sapiens. Rather than treating differences as mere variation within a single lineage, her analyses supported the view that Neanderthals represent a distinct species, comparable in biological separation to other well-recognized primate taxa.

Harvati’s work also strengthened the case for an African origin of modern humans and clarified migration pathways out of Africa. Using comparative morphology, her research helped reconcile fossil and anatomical signals with timing questions, including evolutionary relationships across continents.

One landmark example is Apidima 1 from Greece, widely described as the oldest Homo sapiens fossil identified in Eurasia. Her research helped demonstrate that modern humans reached Europe roughly 150,000 years earlier than previously estimated, reshaping chronologies of early expansions.

Beyond fossils, Harvati’s fieldwork has illuminated how geography influenced survival during climate instability. Studies in Greece and the Balkans indicate the region functioned as both a glacial refugium and corridor for humans and fauna across repeated Pleistocene cycles.

Archaeological discoveries associated with her team extended evidence of human presence in Greece to about 700,000 years ago. More recently, she contributed to findings of the oldest known handheld wooden tools—approximately 430,000 years old—indicating plant-based technological traditions and behavioral flexibility among Pleistocene hominins.

Harvati also holds prominent leadership roles, including twice serving as President of the European Society for the Study of Human Evolution and acting as Editor-in-Chief of the open-access journal PaleoAnthropology. Through mentoring and extensive public outreach, she has increased visibility of human evolution research and encouraged broader participation in the field.
